Bachelor of Māori Development
Māori Media
In the last five years alone New Zealand has seen a significant shift in its media landscape. The advent of a Māori television channel has opened many doors for people interested in working in Māori media and regardless of ethnicity, having a strong foundation in te reo Māori and basic tikanga is highly valued in a field that depends almost entirely on communication.
The Māori Media major offers an exciting insight into the fast-paced world of media and communications, while offering students an opportunity to learn te reo Māori and take part in Māori cultural exchanges, such as wānanga. Graduates of this programme will find they have an edge in a competitive pool of potential employees.
The major is offered in association with the School of Communication Studies and integrates te reo Māori with leading edge media technologies. Multimedia weaves together sound, graphics, animation and video to educate, inform, or simply tell a story interactively. The programme places an emphasis on the various design and production skills required to communicate effectively. Students are encouraged to express themselves using digital technologies and are given hands-on experience in the world of media and broadcasting.
