SUE CHETWINSUE CHETWIN
TE REO MĀORI PAPERS

A chance to speak and write in Te Reo Māori

Singing waiata in girls brigade was all the Māori language Sue Chetwin knew before she signed up for a te reo course at AUT. But the CEO of Consumer NZ says the experience was a real eye opener and challenge.

The course helped, throwing Ms Chetwin into the frontline with regular assessments and practical tasks. Each class was pretty full on, with chances to speak and write in te reo as well as working with other students from a wide variety of backgrounds and cultures.

“I guess I'm more aware of how different our cultures are,” she says. “We do come at things quite differently... I think it's important to know about the culture you're in.”

However, it is something she would encourage her staff and friends to do, especially with the high standard of teaching.

“I couldn't speak of the tutors more highly” she says.
