Bachelor of Arts
English Studies
AUT University’s English Studies degree is the most contemporary in New Zealand. English Studies graduates will have many skills, including the ability to compose written, spoken and multimedia texts to a sophisticated level for a variety of different purposes.
WHAT THIS PROGRAMME COVERS
The major is made up of two complementary areas of focus. First, the use of language as both an object of study and a vehicle for various purposes (e.g. language and communication and modern rhetoric). The second area concentrates on literature and culture (including both regional and broader English literature/s). There are, in addition, electives in a variety of areas, including creative writing.
In the first year students will be introduced to the field of language study and complete core papers that focus on new media and communication skills.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
There are career-focused pathways within this major, including a variety of minors in areas such as multimedia, public relations, advertising, and creative writing. Some minors allow you to gain industry-standard certificates while studying for your major (such as the minors in English Language Teaching, Translation and Interpreting).
PAPERS
Throughout the three years of the BA, students take core papers that provide the necessary skills in writing, research and IT capability to prepare them for academic work and their working life. For a list of core papers see the Bachelor of Arts overview.
