AUT is contracted to Copyright Licensing Limited (CLL) who provide a centralised copyright clearance service to educational institutions. AUT also complies with the Copyright Act 1994 and the Privacy Act 1993. CLLs contract with AUT only applies to AUT employees. All other clients, including students, are restricted to the provisions within the Copyright Act 1994.

AUT has a copyright licence from Screenrights to copy radio and television broadcasts and cable programmes for educational purposes. Copies qualify as made for "educational purposes" if they are made for the purpose of teaching and/or research at the University. This is a broad and simple licence which AUT has purchased to give access to this material.
